Day 1 - St. Albans to Lower Slaughter

Day 1 and the trip starts out from St. Albans Abbey before
heading to the Chiltern Gap at Berkhamstead.  Here we have a steep ascent before crossing the Chilterns and descending at Wendover.  We have a small detour to the Phoenix cycle trail at Prince's Risborough to Thame, and then we head north of Oxford.  We enter the Cotswolds, a part of the route Stephen is particularly looking forward to and stop for the night, most likely in the village Lower Slaughter.

Day 2 - Lower Slaughter to Abergavenny

Day 2 and we continue in the Cotswolds meandering through many villages before descending the escarpment just north of Cheltenham were we cross the Severn flood plain.  We cross the Severn just south of Tewkesbury avoiding having to cycle through Gloucester.  We then head for the Wye at Ross.  Here we descend the river on another detour, following another cycle trail to Monmouth.  We enter Wales and head for Abergavenny where we plan to stop for the night.

Day 3 - Abergavenny to Carmarthen

Day 3 and leaving Abergavenny we enter the Brecon Beacons National Park. Following the canal to the town of Brecon, we are now 170 miles into the ride. Here we have a weather dependent option to circumnavigate Llangorsey Lake. We climb up the Roman road before descending to Llandeillo, passing through Bethlehem on the way. Here we are on the the National Cycle Route and head on to Carmarthen.

Day 4 - Carmarthen to St Davids

We head south after leaving Camarthen heading for the sea which is to be our companion for the remainder of the ride. We trace the coastline from Laugharne through Tenby to Pembroke where we cross Milford Sound on the toll bridge before heading north to Haverfordwest and finally along the Irish Sea to St Davids.
